  1. Larkspur Heritage Preservation Board History Walk

    November 1, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM @ Larkspur City Hall
    400 Magnolia Avenue
    Larkspur, CA 94939

Tour Larkspur’s Historic Downtown with local historian, Richard Cunningham. Saturday, November 1st at 10:00 AM, meet on the steps of Larkspur City Hall at 400 Magnolia Avenue. Larkspur’s downtown area was developed in the late 1880’s by about a dozen families who settled here and founded small businesses. Within a decade, the dirt roads and railroad station had been joined by a variety of homes, services and shops. Many of those original buildings remain in place, only slightly altered after 120 years of adaptation to a changing world. The tour includes entry into selected shops and will visit the sites of the Rose Bowl, stable and train station. This is a free two hour walk, with a mid-course refreshment pause at a protected spot. The walk is sponsored by the Larkspur Historic Preservation Board. Ample parking is available near City Hall. The walk will be cancelled in the event of steady rain. For more information, call Richard Cunningham at 415-924-6976.

  3. Encore Event with Daniel Kunstler, author of Passaic: The True Story of One Man's Journey Through American Immigration

    November 3, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us for an encore event with local author, Daniel Kunstler, who will discuss his new book, "Passaic: The True Story of One Man's Journey Through American Immigration, Detention and Deportation." The plight of Hemnauth Mohabir, a Guyanese immigrant caught in the clutches of the U.S. deportation system, is an exemplary instance of the hardship inflicted upon many thousands by our laws and misuse of our prison apparatus. Entwined with the narrative is the account of how the darker side of our national ambivalence toward immigrants has created a pattern of social control cloaked in the rule of law. Passaic does more than expose a human rights failure. It awakens the reader to the nuts-and-bolts reality of a broken system, and shows us that we might not be quite who we think we are.

    400 Magnolia Avenue
    Larkspur, CA 94939

Nick Kanas will talk about his book: "Solar System Maps: from Antiquity to the Space Age” In recent years, there has been increased interest in our Solar System. This has been prompted by the launching of giant orbiting telescopes and space probes, the discovery of new planetary moons and heavenly bodies that orbit the Sun, and the demotion of Pluto as a planet. In one generation, our place in the heavens has been challenged, but this is not unusual. Throughout history, there have been a number of such world views. Initially, Earth was seen as the center of the universe and surrounded by orbiting planets and stars. Then the Sun became the center of the cosmos. Finally, there was no center, just a vast array of galaxies with individual stars, some with their own retinue of planets. This allowed our Solar System to be differentiated from deep-sky objects, but it didn’t lose its mystery as more and more remarkable bodies were discovered within its boundaries. This book tells the exciting
